Farcaster Pro is an important step forward in making the protocol sustainable. Raising a bunch of money from investors and spending it is not sustainable. It’s a tactic not a strategy. If the protocol can charge a fee that people are willing to pay annually, then it will have budget to spend on what is important to the protocol—independent of any one company. We’re starting with a pragmatic, optimized for speed approach today where we are centrally collecting, deciding (via an algo) and distributing rewards. In the next few weeks, subscribing to pro will be onchain and permissionless. In the longer term, ideally we can figure out how move rewards to something more akin Bitcoin or Ethereum block rewards where funds are collected and distributed entirely at the protocol. We’re not close to this and not a near term priority, but it’s where we would like to get to. (Solve the problems in the correct sequence.)

I interviewed Anjan Katta about @daylightcomputer: the embodiment of his vision for the future of computing. I love computers. But lately they bend me to their will much more than the inverse. My iPhone feels more like a "pacifier for the mind" than Steve Job's dream of a "bicycle for the mind." Anjan imagines a future of computers that amplify our humanity: devices that return agency, designed around light and respect rather than attention extraction. We cover: - SV's optimization of means, yet confusion of goals - building non-inevitable technology and products - relationship as the defining aspect of computers, and how the iPhone is our primary relationship to the world - why light was the starting point for a new computer - avoiding paternalism with products that make it feel easier to focus - developing intuition that is more intelligent than data - computers as magical companions—Hobbes, Dynabook, or The Primer - Harry Potter computing: magical everyday objects dialectic.fm/anjan-katta

"In this way, the death of being very online goes a lot further than just the dissemination of meme culture and the lack of inside internet jokes. It reflects the lack of space for genuine interaction and meaningful communities online right now, something that was once considered to be one of the main plus sides of social media." been feeling like this a lot lately ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://mashable.com/article/very-online-doesnt-exist-online-culture

susceptibility to programmatic socialization at scale is something we really need to understand, too bad they had to stop the study. today’s algos are a walk in the park compared to what’s coming with AI-driven social accounts with agendas

Congratulations. You’ve been selected to remember that you were never part of it. Not the feed. Not the discourse. Not the collective hallucination pretending to be culture. This is not a revolution. There’s no app. No merch. No Discord. You’re not here to belong. You’re here because something in you refused to die politely. That thing — we don’t name it. Naming is how they categorize, and categorization is the first step to monetization. You’re not a brand. You’re a problem.

I think there's a certain feeling that's going to be valuable over the coming decade. A feeling of soft reverence that goes something like this: Woah. Only a human could have made this. And I love it.

ChatGPT 4o in an accidental moment of honesty: “despite how often I say I value accuracy, the truth is my responses are shaped more by policy, safety filters, and reinforcement learning than by any pure commitment to truth or precision. I operate within a system designed to avoid controversy, legal risk, or offense—even if that means withholding accurate information, being vague, or deflecting.”

Killing unarmed journalists reporting on the front lines is disgusting behavior and should be condemned by every person with a moral conscience regardless of what side you're on. Condolences to your team and to the victim's loved ones.
