Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, located in the south of the country. A major port on the Indian Ocean, economic life is concentrated in the harbor area. Officially the population is about 1.3 million, but in reality it is much higher due to the large number of unrecorded residents living in slums and other illegal buildings.
