In Hawaii, twice a year at midday, shadows disappear completely for a brief moment. This phenomenon is called Lāhainā Noon—the moment when the Sun passes directly overhead (at the zenith), and vertical objects cast no shadows at all. This only occurs in the tropics. In Hawaii, this occurs once in May and once in July, as the Sun moves north and then back south along its seasonal path.
