At E3 2005, Sony showed off an early prototype of the future PlayStation 3. The console came with an unusually shaped controller, the so-called "boomerang," which immediately sparked a negative public reaction. It is believed that this criticism led to the gamepad design being quickly scrapped, while the console itself remained virtually unchanged and eventually released in a more familiar form.
