"Lovers' Cigarette Holder," designed by Robert Stern, 1954.
This unusual invention allowed a man and a woman to smoke the same cigarette simultaneously. A photograph of this object was published in LIFE magazine and quickly became a symbol of the post-war era—strange, ironic, and gadget-obsessed.
Stern generally loved absurd functionality. His other ideas included a four-foot cigarette holder, an umbrella holder for rainy days, an ashtray holder, and even a periscope holder. Half satire, half design, and pure 1950s spirit.
