Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia, became a nun and moved to India, where she taught in Calcutta. In 1946, she felt called to serve the poorest of the poor and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. This order dedicated itself to helping the most destitute, including the homeless, sick, and dying. Her work expanded globally, earning her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Despite some criticism, she continued her mission until her death in 1997. In 2016, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta
