Fish farming in Nigeria has grown to become one of the most promising ventures in the agricultural sector. With the country’s vast water resources and increasing demand for fish as a source of protein, aquaculture has provided both food security and employment opportunities for millions of Nigerians.
In the past, fish was mainly obtained from natural sources like rivers, lakes, and streams. However, as the population grew, the demand for fish outpaced the supply from these natural waters. This gave rise to fish farming — the practice of rearing fish under controlled conditions for commercial or subsistence purposes. Today, Nigeria stands as one of the leading fish-producing countries in Africa, with catfish and tilapia being the most commonly farmed species.
