zkPassport is one of the coolest real-world zk applications I’ve seen in a long time.
Back in 2021, I co-founded a Web3 identity company focused on privacy-preserving attestations that smart contracts could consume. Too early, zk tech simply wasn’t ready.
zkPassport is exactly what I dreamed of building back then.
It works similarly to modern nation-state passports that use NFC chips, but with a key difference: zkPassport computes the zk proofs directly inside your device’s secure enclave. No private data is ever shared, only proofs about that data (e.g., you’re over 18, you’re not a sanctioned individual, etc.).
The system also embeds attestations that a liveness check was successfully performed.
And the best part? These proofs are fully consumable on-chain by smart contracts.
Today, zkPassport is already powering the Aztec ICO, and likely to be expanded to more applications.
