US crypto privacy developers face regulatory uncertainty, Coin Center points to policy and enforcement inconsistencies.
The U.S. cryptocurrency policy think tank Coin Center stated that, despite the Trump administration’s prior commitment not to target developers of cryptocurrency privacy software, the Department of Justice continues to take enforcement actions against such developers—including sentencing two Bitcoin developers to prison and prosecuting Ethereum developer Roman Storm, who now faces a retrial on some charges.
Recently, a federal court in Texas dismissed a lawsuit filed by a developer against the Department of Justice, ruling that there is no “credible threat of prosecution.”
Coin Center noted that this inconsistency between policy and enforcement makes it harder for developers to obtain legally binding clarity, leaving the industry in persistent uncertainty.
