A lot of times it is recommended to start learning topics from the bottom up, but personally I think that's a really boring way. I prefer a more boomerang-like approach: start with something overly ambitious, exciting and ultimately unachievable, work your way down to what would it require you to learn, disect everything to the very basics, and then gradually work your way up to the original goal.

Was just talking to someone about this. They were taking a 2 hour intro to the subject but the instructor spent 1.5 hours explaining every bit of vocabulary in detail before getting to the actual doing. Killed their enthusiasm and left them uninspired and uninterested.
