Philosophy is not a way of life. Philosophy means love of knowledge. One can love and chase knowledge without necessarily crawling on the ground wearing rags.
Socrates' poverty was the result of a conscious surrender to ignorance, a metaphorical return to a state of origin and poverty of knowledge that makes possible a more authentic approach to the world of ideas.
Certainly many of Socrates' dialogues would not have taken notice had he not entertained himself with friends and lovers eating and drinking his fill. 😄
