The Great Molasses Flood of 1919
On January 15, 1919, Boston was hit by a deadly wave of… molasses. A massive storage tank holding 2.3 million gallons of the syrup burst, sending a 25-foot-high wave through the streets at 35 mph. The disaster killed 21 people and injured 150.
Molasses can be surprisingly deadly — it’s dense, sticky, and hard to escape once submerged. Rescue efforts were slow, and cleanup took weeks. The cause was traced to poor construction and lack of proper safety inspections.
Today, the Great Molasses Flood is remembered both for its oddity and its tragedy, and it stands as a cautionary tale about industrial safety.
