The Secret of Red Blood Our blood gets its bright red color from a protein called hemoglobin which is found in red blood cells hemoglobin contains iron and its main job is to carry oxygen throughout the body when oxygen binds to the iron in hemoglobin it undergoes a chemical reaction that reflects light in a way that appears bright red to our eyes even though your veins might look blue through your skin your blood is always red it just turns a darker shade of red when it loses oxygen on its way back to the heart
