A lot of founders would do better to take a job. If you sold for nothing obviously the job would have been better in hindsight.

I think it really depends how quickly you can sell more than anything else.  If you can sell just after your seed for a good multiple, you're likely seeing some money.

However, if you've got 10 years for a $50M outcome then you're honestly not seeing much considering that's 10 years of pay likely at better rate with money working in the market or 2-3 smaller wins without the venture tax.

After college, Naval joined @ Home,
one of the hottest internet startups of the ‘90s.

He rose fast. Earned $4M in unvested stock.

Then in 1999, he walked away from all of it
to build something of his own.

That decision would cost him more than money.

He co-founded Epinions.

They raised $8M.
Merged into Shopping .com
IPO’d at $750M.

The VCs made $60M.
His co-founder made $20M.
