In 2017 I published a book of nude instant film photos called Instaxxx and I had hugely successful Kickstarter campaign and sold a ton of copies when it first came out and then it was just a slow trickle. It's taken almost ten years but I am finally on my last box of books. I was looking through some 35mm photos from 2017 and I found these two photos on the same roll and I started thinking about how cool the experience was between the Kickstarter and when I actually published the book.
Instead of just profiting off the money I made on the Kickstarter I spent three months just working on the book. I went out to the west coast a couple times, went on a couple of road trips and reached out to a bunch of friends. I was so honored that people who weren't nude models wanted to be in the book.
On the left is my friend Minka, she is an amazing tattoo artist and I am lucky enough to have one of her first tattoos. We had gone on a couple of dates in like 2008 and on one of them I had taken a sexy polaroid of her but it was never meant to be published, but I reached out to her to see if I could use it for the book and asked if she would be willing to pose for an updated photo. It turned into one of my favorite spreads in the book. On one page she has just a couple of tattoos and on the next page, many years later, she is absolutely covered. I was so honored she wanted to be part of my book.
On the right is my friend Marz. I met Marz because she opened for Wu-Tang at a Village Voice party at SXSW. I was working for the Voice at the time and I briefly met her backstage. She was such an incredible musician. The next day I ran into her in the street and we exchanged contact info and the next time I was in LA I went to her place and we took a bunch of (non-nude) photos. At some point she moved to Harlem and we kept talking about doing another photo shoot but the distance between Brooklyn and Harlem might as well be farther than LA. When I was finishing Instaxxx I asked her if she wanted to be part of it and I couldn't believe she said yes. I finally made the trip uptown and we took a bunch of photos that have ended up in several of my projects including Instaxxx. In fact this very photo was in a very limited edition book I did called "49 Photos I Don't Hate". (I actually found one of the special editions of that book that comes with a signed print when I moved if anyone wants to buy the very last one.)
Okay this was way too long but I guess I was just in the mood to write something. Anyway, if you want one of the last books with sexier photos of these two in it, I will put the link below. The end.
