I wonder if advanced alien civilizations do exist, but just like we don't care to actively try and interact with ants, once you reach all these different technological advancement, you stop caring about other species in pursuit of the next goal. E.g. if you are are type 2 civilization, you wouldn't bother with planets, only suns are interesting really. So aliens would only have an interest in us, if we were on the exact same technological level, otherwise, other life forms are essentially irrelevant...
