In the closing scene of the second film, four people sit at a tableāFredo, Sonny, Tom Hagen, and Michael. One by one, they stand up and leave. An ordinary scene. An ordinary Corleone family dinner. But reality has transformed it into something terrifyingly mystical.
The actors leave this world in exactly the same order in which their characters left the table.
The first to leave was John Cazale, as Fredo. Then, in 2022, James Caan, as Sonny. And now Robert Duvall, as Tom Hagen, is gone, the third to leave the table.
Alone remains at the table. Michael Corleone. Al Pacino.
In the film, he sat like thatālast, silent, while the others left. Now he sits like that in real life. The only living one of the four. Kino sometimes writes scripts that no screenwriter could handle.
