Just watched Dakar: Race Against the Desert on my return flight home. Holy moly that is a serious contest of man, machine, the landscape, and the elements in an ultimate race without any roads or navigation besides a paper map book/scroll for like 14 days and ~8000km. Life and limb literally on the line. Racers tragically die almost every year. Getting hurt somehow is nearly guaranteed, especially on motorcycles. Some a lot worse than others. Those moto riders eventually “transition” (more like retire) into cars after their first career phase takes its toll. This is like the evolution of the Mad Max x Gladiator race across the ravaging desert, in a more gentlemanly like manner, you know sponsored by all the biggest motorsports brands around the world. Like Le Mans of off-road motorsports combined with Tour de France endurance but with added navigation skills to boot. Classes range from motorbikes to buggies to ATVs trucks and rally cars/SUVs, and newer class Side by Sides. It covered the 2023 Dakar rally race where Audi debuted their RS-Q e-tron racer as their first and the race’s first all electric T1U (Ultimate) vehicle competing against the other T1 gas buggies. So cool. These machines and pilots are unbelievable. Super inspiring pushing the limits. Might have missed my calling here😹 Grew up riding a quad and that is basically like the most fun a kid can ever have bouncing around the planet on dirt, trails, mud, snow, streams, fields, mountains, sand, wherever hitting jumps and flying down hills with dozens of horsepower under your ass. Watching that movie, especially while flying back from Mykonos where ATVs and motorbikes rule that island is definitely reawakening this love of motorsports in me. Definitely check it out to see some crazy competitors at the top of their games like Toby Price, Kevin Benavides, Sébastien Loeb, Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah, and rising star Cristina Gutierrez repping bad-ass women racers taking to the sport. Fair warning the movie is basically a Red Bull advert, so that’s basically what you’re getting here. Full on adrenaline from the Red Bull team of A-players while they battle it out in the Saudi desert. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt37069847/
