Wizards—and D&D clerics and druids—are inspired by real-world European sorcerers, who followed many strict taboos. One of the most important was never using tools that could cut vegetation. If they were seen holding such objects, the spirits of nature would flee and refuse to be influenced by their magic. The only sharp tool they were allowed to carry was a sickle or knife made of gold, inscribed with runes, used only for harvesting sacred herbs. To blend in with nature spirits, these sorcerers dressed to resemble them—tall pointed hats, long flowing robes, and similar mystical attire. Other taboos included: * Never touching a horse * Never stepping directly on the ground (they were carried on chairs or shields) * Wearing only certain colors * Avoiding salt * Abstaining from sex before casting spells * Never revealing their true name * Keeping magic away from iron or steel * Sometimes walking backwards * Never sleeping on bare earth …and many more.
