used to worry about "getting in with the right crowd" or appearing cool in an industry, such as music or tech. Then I realized that life's assignment is really to make a difference in the sphere of influence you already have. Your reputation grows from there. Use your knowledge and experience to serve the people already in your life, and don't grab at something bigger. The "bigger" will come later when people a) know what you're talking about and b) can be TRUSTED. Trust with money, with customers, with information, is the key to building a career. I don't agree with people say that "Don't take it personal, it's just business." Ahem. ALL business is personal and built on personal reputation and trust. Smart businesses know this. Dumb businesses discard people and relationships. Be smart with your career and business, and who and what you are entrusted with now. The rest follows.
