The year is 2012.
I'm flying to Silicon Valley for the first time from rural Carolina, to interview at LinkedIn. This would be a BIG deal for me.
My wife is holding our newborn daughter beside me on the plane.
Our twin daughters are back in Carolina, being watched by my mother-in-law in the singlewide trailer where we lived.
I'm coding and reviewing algorithms in advance of the interview.
A gentleman beside me is also coding. We glance at one another's screens and laugh at the stereotypical irony.
Him: "what're you headed to the Bay for?"
Me: "interviewing at LinkedIn. hoping for the best."
Him: "no clue. gonna crash on my friend's couch and figure it out."
Me: "I'm sure you will, man. Let's stay in touch."
We've stayed in touch.
That gentleman was William Hockey.
He figured it out.
