Every point along the length of that bolt is generating a sonic boom. Most of it is roughly equidistant from you and arrives very nearly simultaneously. This is the loud BOOM of the thunder. Some of the upper reaches of the bolt, miles into the sky have a bit further to travel and so is the short rumble which follows after the boom. This Boom and a short rumble is not what you call rolling thunder. What you are describing as “thunder-like” rolling sound… is rolling thunder. That long drawn-out rumbling that goes on and on for a few moments. But sometimes lightning can take a very long path to ground and travel many miles horizontally before striking down.
