This is the Paris Opera, or Opera Garnier, named after the architect Charles Garnier. He was unknown and working on small commissions in Paris when a competition for a new opera house was announced in 1861. Charles was already 35 years old at the time, and it often seemed to him that fate had passed him by. But he took part in the competition and won, gaining the opportunity to use rare and expensive materials for the building's decoration. The result was this masterpiece, which has survived for centuries.
