I don't actually think NYC *needs* more tax revenue. That's apparently not a metric that most voters are optimizing for anymore, which is fine. They want cost of living to stop exploding, which is what happens when companies leave. Some quick tax revenue numbers from Gemini:

Yes, as it should. This is what the people who lived there voted for. For a long time, cities have been making that trade-off, reducing quality of life for their most vulnerable citizens to attract business with juicy tax breaks. That can only be taken so far before voters start turning the knob the other direction. Neither extreme makes sense, and the joy of democracy is that we have a built in non-violent mechanism to make those course corrections as necessary.

Sure, but I also think it's pretty silly to start knowledge work companies in areas with overpriced real estate. I don't think "keeping the knowledge work" is really on the agenda of anyone making these decisions. I think that market proximity (speed of light restrictions) and sunk real estate costs are going to anchor enough people to NYC that they'll actually need to support the rest of the people who live there, and that's a good thing. Wealth disparity always leads to violence, and the easiest way to reduce violence, IMO, is to tackle wealth disparity. Zohran explains the math on this in the video Dan posted, and it's not too complicated. Reasonable tax policies will pay for a lot of what the most vulnerable in NYC need to live their best lives, which isn't actually a lot.

Isn't it more that people on the left are demanding that the ultra wealthy, who have increasingly been dodging taxes, start paying their fair share again? Wealth disparity has never been higher, especially in NYC. The ultra wealthy will be fine dialing back the parasitism a couple notches, and hungry kids can eat again.

Not my coast, but my understanding is that NYC has a massive food desert problem, where the costs to operate a grocery store is uneconomical for the level of demand that can be generated by the neighborhood. Getting money to people is the easy part, getting food to the neighborhood is hard, and what this addresses. (allegedly)

I feel like the whole Michelin thing is a grift, and even moreso after watching Emily in Paris. I went to a Michelin star okonomiyaki place in Osaka during Devcon in 2019, and it was okay I guess. The fact that there are zero Michelin star places in the Pacific Northwest despite us being legendary for our food is telling. In Portland especially, we generally don't play those weird status extortion games.
