We can learn a lot about the modern state of crypto by rewinding the clock to the first major retail bull run: 2017. I was in the trenches. A Stanford drop-out working for ConsenSys (the Ethereum Foundation’s de facto private arm) and running an ICO investment fund in Manhattan. What happened to me is a cautionary tale, a modern story of Icarus flying too close to the sun. Millions made, millions lost in the matter of months. Drug addiction, sex and a bizarre psychotic break that led, like a phoenix out of the ashes, to discovering what really matters in life. So much of the challenge of writing comes down to shifting from thinking about writing to actually writing. Ray Bradbury famously had a Post-it note on his typewriter that read “DON’T THNK!” The more I write, the more I realize the wisdom in that.

A year ago, I was 28 and making $140k base salary as a director of a startup accelerator. I was also miserable. Fast forward to today. I’m a banquet server living in a small apartment, making a fifth as much money. I published my first book in April and am working on my second. Never been happier in my life. Redefining success from a full bank account to a full heart has been a profound shift. Life is rich.
