Why the implication that religious people are self aware? Can they not be guided to adopt whatever permutation of sub-beliefs the authority at the podium is serving that day?

You could read this as just a jab at "gray tribe" or at reddit-think.

The deeper criticism is the fish/water effect where many who think of themselves as rational can't see their own ideology. Religious people are at least self-consciously accepting a particular belief system. The ones Karp is talking about are not.

It tickles me in all the right places

But I can’t help but find it ironic that we all rush to buy the same book that tells us we are the ones who think different, and that it’s everyone else who suffers from crowd think

Yeah education should definitely focus more on cultivating original/critical thinking skills, people should be able to question assumptions and explore their own perspectives
