I graduated from J-school in 2010, so also during the "tough time for journalists" phase. I have a bunch of funny stories about veteran journalists coming to visit or giving guest lectures and basically saying the same thing about the state of the profession... and it wasn't good. Also agree that the toolset is valuable and can be widely applied beyond working in a newsroom.
