What natural conditions on the night of the Titanic sinking made it so difficult for the crew to avoid the iceberg?
According to the legend and eyewitness accounts, three main natural factors contributed to the iceberg collision:
A moonless atmosphere
Calm water
Lunar activity
In the first case, the moonless night meant that light was simply not visible.
Writing this as somebody who has been following the midnight activity of the moon for weeks now as part of a natural science project — which happens to nearly coincide with the approximate time the collision actually transpired — I remember the nights I was in the field when a moon was not visible and seeing absolutely nothing.
