Today (10.9) is Hangeul Proclamation Day in Korea. King Sejong created and distributed 한글("Han-geul") in the year 1443 so ordinary people could express themselves easily.
Before Hangeul, Chinese was the sole written language in medieval Korea (Joseon dynasty), causing not only a discrepancy between speech and text, but a communication barrier for non-elites.
With an easy-to-learn scientific character system, literary life flourished starting from women and Buddhism in Joseon, fueling Korea for centuries to the amazing modern culture we boast today.
Hangeul, like Base, is for everyone.
