While @july has never felt more optimistic about the future, I'm slowly veering in the opposite direction. A few people asked why, so I wrote this short essay. After years of working with century long time horizons, I'm noticing a shift in my optimism. I believe it partly stems from a paradox around unprecedented global connectivity alongside deepening fragmentation. It makes me wonder if our technological ingenuity can truly outpace our collective dysfunction when planetary challenges demand wisdom. https://cyrusclarke.substack.com/p/why-an-optimist-is-slowly-veering

true - for some reason most of the prototypes in my lab still work and are on “show” so maybe I forgot what reality looks like

Visiting a lab and I was really exited to see a machine I’d read about in Nature that demonstrated end to end DNA data storage Little did I know that this much hyped demo now lives under a desk. The reality of science. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-41228-8

Very excited to announce that we’ve dosed our first patient with our latest next-gen cancer immunotherapy drug which is broadly applicable to most solid tumors! We started working on this one in 2022. It’s really cool to see how quickly a drug can go from an idea into the clinic. https://investors.vir.bio/news/news-details/2025/Vir-Biotechnology-Announces-First-Patient-Dosed-in-Phase-1-Clinical-Trial-of-EGFR-Targeting-PRO-XTEN-Dual-Masked-T-Cell-Engager-VIR-5525-for-the-Treatment-of-Solid-Tumors/default.aspx

Sitting at the Molecular Programming 10-Year Flightplan Conference. We're talking about how we could get to the point where programming matter becomes commonplace. A vision so enormously transformative I don't think anyone can fully fathom what it would imply. Then I see a notification on my phone about 'content coins' or something and it just makes me in equal parts dismayed and motivated. The opportunity cost of our attention and capital misallocation is really staggering if you think about it too much. Things that are so ephemeral and flimsy they barely meet the designation of vapourware are sitting on billions maybe trillions in value. Meanwhile genuinely transformative research work that could fundamentally restructure (literally) everything operate on fractional budgets. I do think there will be a tipping points where capital will naturally start to flow toward substance. We need more bridges between researchers and allocators, more stories about what becomes possible when we fund things that matter. When that connection happens, we unlock futures where programming matter is as routine as programming software.
