While @july has never felt more optimistic about the future, I'm slowly veering in the opposite direction. A few people asked why, so I wrote this short essay. After years of working with century long time horizons, I'm noticing a shift in my optimism. I believe it partly stems from a paradox around unprecedented global connectivity alongside deepening fragmentation. Wait till you hear about the crab hacker barnacle (Sacculina carcini) which chemically castrates male crabs, rewires its hormones and behaviour and makes it act like a female, causing the crab to tend to the parasite’s eggs as if they were its own.

my instant reaction would be that it’s so hard to have any real sense of this, but: we do know that humans generally have a natural tendency toward optimism. And that people with more comfortable economic situation generally have more reason to be positive about long term futures So I’d say on average we’re probably more optimistic now than at the start of the 20th century about possible futures, even if it’s completely irrational.

I wonder if anything has really changed. We still have world expos and such events today where ambitious visions are presented and designed to inspire optimism. The general optimism bias is still holding up and is as irrational as ever. I imagine that it’s also mostly the same types of people that were bullishly optimistic and hopeful at the turn of the 20th century who are now bullish on contemporary potential futures.

Seriously though, more than happy to give $120 earned entirely from farcaster back to farcaster to help it grow. There’s something grounding about contributing to a vision you believe in. I recently stopped paying for X because frankly it felt pretty odd to pay for my own torture. But here, it’s different. It’s inspiring to be part of thousands of people who want to see a more decentralized internet. Feels good to be part of something.
