A Deity’s Power Comes from Its Believers In Japan’s Shinto, there are the “eight million kami”: mountains, rivers, grasses, and trees can all become gods. Yet these spirits are not born omnipotent—their divine might often depends on how frequently people perform rites and how devoutly they do so. The more visits, the deeper the reverence, the more one can “nurture” a powerful deity. Similar ideas abound in Celtic lore: the worlds of gods and mortals permeate each other, and divine power is sustained by praise, ritual, and memory.
