Would a polar bear attack penguins if they were in an enclosure together? There is an old joke: “Why don’t polar bears eat penguins?” The answer of course is that polar bears only live in the Arctic and penguins only live in the Antarctic, and ne’er the twain shall meet. Neither of them has ever crossed the tropics to get to the other hemisphere. They don’t put them together in zoos because it is pretty obvious what would happen - no penguins left after the first day. Polar bears will eat any animal that can’t outrun them, and they swim pretty well, too. I’m sure that if some idiot decided to transplant polar bears to Antarctica, they would quickly wipe out the entire penguin population of the continent. This is what happened when they introduced Canadian beavers to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina with the intention of creating a commercial fur trading industry.
