Do you know ancient Romans had fast food long before McDonald’s?
In cities like Pompeii, archaeologists have discovered thermopolia small street-side shops that served hot, ready to eat meals. These shops had counters with built-in clay jars that held stews, soups, wine, and other foods. For poor Romans who didn’t have kitchens at home, thermopolia were the go-to place to eat. The food was cheap, filling, and quick perfect for daily workers and travelers. Some shops even had painted menus on the walls, showing what was available. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE preserved some of these restaurants almost perfectly, giving us a window into ancient dining culture. Just like today, people wanted convenient, affordable meals on the go. The existence of Roman “fast food” shows how much human habits remain the same, even after thousands of years. The difference? Instead of burgers and fries, they were grabbing lentil stew and bread.
