The Statue of Liberty Was Originally a Lighthouse
Do you know the Statue of Liberty was once used as a lighthouse? When it was gifted to the United States by France in 1886, it wasn’t just a symbol of freedom.
it also served a practical purpose. From 1886 to 1902, the statue functioned as a lighthouse for ships entering New York Harbor. A powerful electric light in the torch could be seen up to 24 miles away. However, the design wasn’t very effective compared to dedicated lighthouses, and eventually, the function was abandoned. Still, it marked the Statue as one of the first structures in the U.S. to use electric lighting. Over time, Lady Liberty became more than just a guide for sailors , she became a global icon of hope and democracy. Imagine arriving in America by boat a century ago, seeing the glowing torch welcoming you. For millions of immigrants, it was more than light, it was a promise.
