News. When I was a kid, people paid money for newspapers. Now we (mostly) pay for news with clicks. This has really messed up the incentives for the news agencies and a drastic reduction in quality has followed. We need to get back to paying real money for well researched, and fact checked, information.
The documentary "The Great Hack" (2019) taught us that Facebook's algorithm was sophisticated enough to know what mood people were in; then it used that to affect their behavior. Instead of selling us junk, they could’ve been helping us be healthier and happier. Now I have hope that dream will be realized after all.
Ideally, they should work with the third party apps to make it win/win/win for the platform/users/clients. The users could be required to pay for a premium account or opt in to ads and then the platform and the client can split the revenue from each.
AI is here to stay. There are some concerns but we will weather the intelligence storms and everything will be alright.
