Let’s talk about where you can find capital and the pros and cons of each option. Before we get into it, though, it’s key to remember that a dollar isn’t just a dollar. The question is what the investor offers IN ADDITION TO the money.
Bootstrapping is when you inject your own $ into the company. Pros: you maintain full control, it’s non-dilutive, and there’s nothing to negotiate. Cons: it may hamstring your growth. With that said, nowadays, the line of thinking is to bootstrap as long as possible especially if you’re building a lifestyle co.
Friends and family. Think long and hard before taking money from friends/family. Most startups fail (sorry, they do), and it gets super awk sitting across the table from your uncle who bet $25K on you while you eat turkey and sip vino during thanksgiving.
