AI Needs to Be Decentralized Dr. Richard Sutton (@RichardSSutton), a pioneer of the interdisciplinary field of reinforcement learning, recently spoke about the power of decentralized collaboration, calling it the foundation of human progress and everything good in the world. AI should be no different. Right now, AI progress is being slowed by centralized restrictions. Governments and big companies want tight control, deciding who can develop AI and how it’s used. But history shows that the biggest breakthroughs come from open collaboration, not top-down control. The internet thrived because it wasn’t locked down by a single entity—AI should follow the same path. Some fear AI will replace humans, but that misses the point. AI isn’t a threat—it’s a tool for human progress. It should be open and decentralized, allowing many contributors to improve it rather than being locked away by a few.
