Memecoins are still the gateway drug for crypto.
Dogecoin, the OG, remains the leader to this day, but there are many more across multiple blockchains.
I was reading CoinGecko's 2025 State of Memecoins Report, and the following are some key takeaways:
It all started in 2013 with Dogecoin, and no other memecoin emerged until 2020, when a few dog-themed tokens on Ethereum came into existence, like Shiba Inu and Floki.
Then it was the BONK and PEPE season in 2023, followed by Bitcoin memes (ordinals) and Solana memes like WIF and FARTCOIN in 2024.
In late 2024, we had AI memes, driven by Virtuals Protocol.
So now memecoins have become a sizable sector of the ecosystem, at about $40 billion ($237 billion at peak) as of today, half of which is attributed to Dogecoin.
The United States is the most interested country in memecoins throughout 2025, followed by India and Germany.
Which are your favorite or most profitable memes?
