What does NVIDIA H100 do?
As the first GPU to support Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), the NVIDIA H100 GPU represents a significant advancement. When the H100 is in TEE mode, it functions in a safe, segregated environment with encrypted data transfers between the CPU and GPU. This is made possible by "bounce buffers," which protect inputs and outputs during their transitions between the GPU's internal memory and the CPU's encrypted memory.
To guarantee complete security, the H100 works in tandem with CPU TEEs such as AMD's Secure Encrypted Virtualization – Secure Nested Paging (SEV-SNP) or Intel's Trusted Domain Extensions (TDX), encrypting communication between the GPU driver and related software. This ensures data integrity throughout the process and stops unwanted access.
The H100 also makes use of remote attestation to confirm the identity and authenticity of the GPU's firmware. Only verified firmware is run during the GPU's boot process thanks to Secure Boot, which improves security even further.
