Ethereum’s ProgPoW upgrade in 2025, designed to favor GPU mining, has pushed miners toward smaller Ethash-based coins. Ravencoin (RVN), with its KAWPOW algorithm—a ProgPoW derivative—sees a 40% hashrate increase, offering 50 MH/s on an RTX 3090. Ergo (ERG), another GPU-friendly coin, gains traction with its Autolykos algorithm, promising better rewards at 120 MH/s. Miners also eye Ethereum Classic (ETC), which retains Ethash and delivers stable returns despite lower fees. ProgPoW’s aim to deter ASICs has revitalized GPU mining, but rising DAG sizes (nearing 4GB) exclude GPUs under 6GB. As Ethereum’s mining profitability dips, these altcoins provide a lifeline, potentially driving their prices up 20% by Q4 2025.
