Jeffrey Epstein invested $3 million in Coinbase in December 2014 at a reported $400 million valuation. The deal was facilitated by Brock Pierce and his firm Blockchain Capital. Coinbase co founder Fred Ehrsam was aware of Epstein’s involvement and requested a meeting with him.
The disclosure highlights how early crypto funding came from a wide range of private investors during Coinbase’s formative years. It also raises questions about early venture capital networks in the crypto industry.
Epstein later sold around half of his Coinbase stake back to Blockchain Capital in 2018 for an estimated $11 to $15 million. Attention is now on how early crypto investments were structured and disclosed.
