Zama is not a traditional layer 1 or layer 2 blockchain. Instead, it develops the Zama Confidential Blockchain Protocol, a cross-chain confidentiality layer that runs on top of existing L1 and L2 networks like Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, or Solana, without changing their core structure.
This makes Zama a complementary protocol rather than a standalone chain. It leverages Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) to power confidential smart contracts that compute directly on encrypted data while staying compatible with existing DeFi applications. The integration happens through fhEVM, an FHE-enabled Ethereum Virtual Machine, which lets developers write confidential smart contracts in Solidity without needing deep cryptography expertise.
