the pomegranate in art has many meanings, but the most interesting comes from the myth of proserpine
according to legend, pluto kidnapped proserpine and took her to the underworld to make her his wife. her mother managed to get her back, but with one catch: proserpine spends part of each year on earth, and part in the underworld. all because of the pomegranate seeds pluto gave her – by tasting food from the world of the dead, she was bound to it forever
that’s how the pomegranate became a symbol of rebirth and immortality
by the way, this painting by dante gabriel rossetti is called proserpine. he painted his muse and lover, jane morris, who was married. their relationship mirrored the myth: she spent part of her time with the artist, and part with her husband
