Most people think blockchain is just one system. It’s not. Blockchain works in layers and each layer has a job. Layer 1 (L1) is the main layer. This is where the rules live and where the final record is kept. It’s very secure, but when too many people use it, things slow down and fees rise. Ethereum is a Layer 1 blockchain. Layer 2 (L2) sits on top. It handles most transactions first because it’s faster and cheaper. Every so often, it sends a summary back to Layer 1 to be locked in securely. Base is a Layer 2 on Ethereum. When you use Base, you’re still relying on Ethereum’s security. You just get faster, cheaper transactions that actually feel usable. Layers work together like this: L1 = safety & truth L2 = speed & usability Without layers, blockchain is powerful but painful. With layers, it becomes practical for everyday use. That’s why understanding layers is the first step to understanding Web3.
