This wasn’t a smart contract exploit. This wasn’t a protocol bug.
The source of truth was manipulated.
In the recent incident involving #LayerZero infrastructure, attackers didn’t break on-chain logic — they compromised #RPC nodes and made the system validate cross-chain messages that never actually existed.
Not fake balances. Fake proof.
Even worse, compromised nodes returned different data depending on who was asking: false data to the verifier, normal data to everyone else. No obvious red flags.
At the same time, healthy nodes were hit with DDoS, forcing the system to rely on compromised infrastructure.
In setups with minimal validation assumptions, a single compromised input can be enough.
DeFi doesn’t just have a code problem. It has a trust problem.
