Machines are not in conversation; language involves not just information and word but commitments and intersubjectively redeemable claims to validity. Machines do not do this. My copy of Habermas’s book is a treasured hand me down from my friend and PhD advisor, Hubert Dreyfus, who left us almost exactly 7 years ago.

Hello, is this thing on? Revising Habermas’s essay “What is Universal pragmatics?” - His systematic foray into speech act theory. Perhaps more important today than ever because of the way people believe that LLMs are actually speaking language.
