These fruit are getting pruned.

So we pushed a big boost of compost into this house before planting, and went light on the Nitrogen applications; yet it turns out this batch of compost was heavily tilted in the C:N ratio.

The earliest cucumbers have been struggling more than usual.  We typically would start letting the plants set fruit by this date, yet this year we’ll prune all the young fruit for another week or so and let the plants gain a bit of vigor.

Just boosted them with a round of alfalfa meal (a low octane organic nitrogen source) and calcium nitrate; which is instantly available once the drip lines are turned on.  Alongside a boost of potassium and magnesium salts and a few traces, we should see more pronounced growth this week.

We’ll give the plants two weeks before determining if we want to hit them one more time with another side dressing.

Pruning fruit off the cukes for at least one more week.

Update:

Sidedressing is kicking in, after removing fruit a week ago, the new set it off to the races and plants are starting to get back on track.

Cucumbers are one of our primary crops; so far this year we’ve planted 8 beds in our fieldhouses and will start outdoor transplanting later this week.
