💯 November 22, 2017: Byzantium Success
Four years ago, on this day in 2017, the Ethereum network was celebrating the successful implementation of the Byzantium Hard Fork!
1️⃣ The Upgrade: Byzantium was the first major step in the long-planned Metropolis phase of Ethereum's development. It introduced several critical upgrades (via EIPs), most famously EIP-649, which included a subtle, but important, delay of the Difficulty Bomb.
2️⃣ The Impact: Delaying the bomb gave core developers breathing room to focus on future upgrades (like Constantinople) and the eventual shift to Proof-of-Stake. It also introduced foundational cryptography updates that made zero-knowledge proofs (Zk-SNARKs) possible on the mainnet, directly paving the way for today's private transactions and Layer 2 scaling solutions.
It’s a great reminder that even minor-sounding delays can be crucial for long-term health and innovation.
