I’m going to host a dedicated Frames discussion with AT Protocol / Bluesky app builders, and will announce here when I schedule it. Thanks for sharing @boscolo.eth
Frames is an example of work pioneered on Farcaster that is still rippling through other (non-web3) social ecosystems. In this video, Open Frames is being demonstrated in an open source Bluesky client. h/t to @boris for hosting and pushing this work. https://youtu.be/gH1fdonUbZ0?t=2901 It would be amazing if Farcaste

Been thinking about this across multiple ecosystems beyond mobile. Apps is itself a broad category - think also WordPress plugins, Browser extensions, Frames And: app stores, distribution, discovery, curation, payment @jbrukh

The iOS app store adds 40K new apps a month. The Google Play store adds 50K. Most of these are noise. It takes 90K apps a month to create a few apps that are profitable, growing, good. How many apps does crypto add per month? Maybe 10s of apps?

One of the biggest censorship vectors for blockchain protocols is RPC / lack of light clients. This is solved by more P2P-ish data transfer (eg IPFS, Farcaster Hubs, ATProtocol PDS), but this is also a UX barrier: running servers on phones, at home, etc is hard and potentially pricey.

In protocol terms, you don’t opt out of SMTP storing and forwarding email. An email client or hosting service would have its own ToS, some of which depends on what its jurisdiction is.
There’s right to be forgotten which would be - delete your account. No guarantee that hubs respect that. I actually don’t know what the “copyright” here would be. People own their words, the protocol has rights to reproduce / cache / use as needed.

“You can’t just point at things and call them all protocols”
Operating systems = protocol layer. For Apple and Google, accounts, storage, and payment are included. Windows ??? Legacy install base. Apple bundles user data + synch. Cross-platform? Good luck! There ARE new opportunities for “OS” layers opening up. Not sure who has the patient capital to go for it.

Game publishers have moved to building in house gaming engines. That’s the protocol layer. They use a studio to development IP into a game. That’s a full stack app, including a client. DLC and modding tools can extend that app. Frames, alt clients. Publishers also provide accounts & payment.

The word client is also a red herring. What app are you building that sits on top of the account system and social graph of Farcaster?
disagree I think clients will manage to compete, but it's going to take a strong team with funding + patience, a differentiated beachhead, and possibly an existing user base (ex: zora/metamask/... add a farcaster client interface). Unfortunately builders underestimate the difficulty of getting DAUs (myself included)

The next boss for Farcaster-the-protocol is 1M DAU @dwr is calling his shot at the final boss of 10M DAUs Some paths to get there: proto apps that go beyond microblogging and country specific growth (these can be venture sized) One layer up, vibrant dev community around primitives.
