The platypus is a waterfowl mammal of the monotreme order that lives in Australia. It is the only living member of the platypus family; together with the echidnovae, it forms a detachment of monotremes - mammals, in a number of characteristics reminiscent of reptiles and non-mammal cynodonts. This unique animal is one of the symbols of Australia; it appears on the reverse of the Australian 20 cent coin.
